Where Should I Start with UX Research?

“What is UX Research, how is it conducted, if questions like ‘What do I want to learn?’ are on your mind, you are in the right place. Here, you will taste the ‘flavours’ of surveys, interviews, and observations in the User Research menu; you will find fun tips about participant selection and data analysis!”

Clarify Your Purpose – “What Problem Should Be Solved in User Research?”

If you aim to improve user experience but haven’t set a goal like “Which page has issues, at which step does the user get frustrated?”, it means you are lost in the ocean without a route. For instance, the question “Why do they abandon the form halfway?” may lead you to the conclusion “Then let’s shorten the form or make it more fun.” If the goal is not clear, the data you collect is doomed to gather dust on the shelf with a ‘Wow, interesting!’

UX Research Method Selection – Survey, Interview, Observation? (Quantitative vs. Qualitative)

If you say “Let the survey be the appetizer, the interview the main course, and the observation the dessert in the UX Research menu!” you are on the right track. Quantitative data provides statistics like “40% dislike this page,” while a Qualitative approach gives emotional details like “The button color hurts my eyes.” The sweetest part is mixing them all: You can create a full “user analysis feast” by capturing both numbers and emotions.

Usability Testing Participant Selection – Find the Right Audience, Add Diversity

You will test a game application, but are you calling participants over 70 years old? Of course, different viewpoints are nice, but first, you should capture the real “Target Audience.” Then, adding diversity with age, gender, and profession differences always enriches your data. You can also invest in the future by adding the question “Who is the potential audience that could use this product in the future?”

Design Based on Data and Design with UX Data – “So What’s Next?”

The survey has been filled, interviews have been conducted, observations have been noted. No pulling back with a “Wow, how interesting!” If a user says, “I was confused on this screen,” talk with the design team about “What should we change, how can we shorten the flow?” If the data doesn’t translate into application, it remains there as “Interesting information.” The true value of UX Research lies in taking you to the point of “We know the problem and this is the solution.”

The design is like a joke.

If you have to explain it,

it's bad.
